Police
in England and Wales received more than 900,000 calls about domestic
abuse last year - an average of more than 100 calls an hour, according
to a report by the police watchdog.
HM Inspectorate of
Constabulary found the number of incidents recorded by police in the
last 18 months has risen by almost a third. It says this is partly due
to forces making domestic violence a priority since its last inspection,
but it says there are still improvements to be made.
The news
comes just two weeks before the government introduces "coercive control"
as a new criminal offence, carrying a maximum prison sentence of up to
five years.
Lindsay suffered from both physical violence and
extreme psychological and emotional abuse, known as coercive control,
from her ex-partner. He is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence.
