Finnish authorities deal with cases of human trafficking remarkably often these days, reports the daily Helsingin Sanomat on Friday.

By the start of December, police and the Border Guard had launched investigations or reported offences regarding 25 suspected cases of human trafficking. This is significantly more than 10 or fewer cases probed on average in previous years.

According to Robin Lardot of the National Police Board, the difference is not down to an increase in trafficking, but to closer scrutiny from authorities. He says they have made a conscious decision to focus on the problem.

The cases being investigated at the moment include that of a man of Somali background who has been held since September on charges including terrorist-related aggravated human trafficking.
