Seven Kosovars, including doctors and a former health ministry official, are facing trial in Pristina today on charges of human organ trafficking.
The trial is being run by the European Union rule of law mission.
Prosecutors allege that the defendants lured donors by promising to pay them as much as 20,000 euros for their kidneys and other organs, and later resold them at a much higher prices to patients who needed transplants.
According to a report published by the European Commission on Human Rights last year, some of the incumbent Kosovo`s leaders, including Prime Minister Hasim Taci, were involved in the human trafficking scheme.
