KABUL CITY (
): Seventy-two people linked to human trafficking were arrested this year, while 40,000 Afghans smuggled into Turkey are languishing in bad conditions, an official said on Sunday.
General crime branch chief at the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Maj. Gen. Syed Abdul Ghafar Syedzada, told a news conference that syndicates also smuggled Afghan nationals into Europe via Iran, Turkey and Greece.
After terrorism and drugs, human trafficking is the biggest crime and a lucrative business, as experts say the illegal global business was worth about $4 billion annually.
Besides, Syedzada revealed that 17 Indians and three Nepali citizens illegally sent to Afghanistan by a Nepali agent had been arrested during an operation in Kabul on Saturday night. The alleged smuggler was detained and some fake passports were also seized.
He also revealed that those involved in these clandestine operations were employees of travel agencies.
He said: "One person, including a director of a travel agency charged $23,000 for a fake German visa issued to a woman. She was detained by police at the Kabul airport.''
The two confessed to their crimes and police recovered the money from the duo.
One of the woman’s relatives disclosed that the travel agent informed they could obtain legal German visa by paying $23,000.
He added:"Whenever we contacted officials at the Kabul airport, they said the visa was faked. We informed the Interior Ministry of the case to detain and punish the individuals to prevent such incidents in the future.''
