Global human trafficking roundup (November 4, 2010)

 
NORTH AMERICA
Oregon: Two men are facing felony charges for trafficking runaway teens for prostitution. Investigators believe that the two men were fighting over who would control the teen and discovered when one of them was chasing after another with a knife at a hotel.
Canada: Police arrested the second suspect on charges of human trafficking of women in exchange for drugs. He was arrested outside of the court while he was waiting to testify on behalf of the other suspect who is already in custody.
EUROPE
Scotland: The authority launches a project to assist child trafficking victims. The children came to Scotland as asylum seekers but forced to work on Cannabis factories, wash cars, work as servants, and pose as dependents to benefit scams. The project aims to allow social workers to build relationship with the child victims and discover their troubled past. Out of 13 child victims under the project, the youngest one is 14 and at least one of them were forced into sex slavery. Many victims are from African countries such as Congo, Nigeria, Kenya, etc.
ASIA
UAE: A 31 year old man was convicted of forcing a girl into prostitution with his another accomplice from Pakistan. They brought girls from Pakistan and sold her for approximately $8000. The victim testified that she was lured into coming to Dubai to work for the suspect as a domestic helper in exchange for $272 monthly salary. Upon arrival, she was forced to prostitute herself with the suspect's friends and other men.
Nepal: A 24 year old trafficking survivor tells her story. She left her family for a big city to help them financially when she was 14 years old. When she arrived in the city, she was lured into a domestic helper job by a man. After working a few days for a family, she was transferred to India and had her kidney removed without her consent at an Indian hospital. When she came back to Nepal and married a gang member, she gave a birth to her child. But, she was trafficked again to Assam, India and sold for prostitution.
Australia: Police arrested four people on human trafficking charges while raiding illegal brothels. According to the report, raid was conducted in order to show the police commitment against human trafficking and forced prostitution. As a result, several brothels were closed down. Police also took four other illegal immigrants into custody.
AFRICA
Nigeria: A Nigerian man is facing human trafficking charges before the court. He allegedly trafficked victims from West African countries to Congo and profited thousands of U.S. dollars. He kept the victims dire and isolated conditions while awaiting to be smuggled to the destination. He used lax immigration laws and was able to smuggle all of the victims  legally.
