A woman has been arrested for allegedly trafficking cocaine valued at Sh12 million at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Police said the woman (name withheld) had arrived from Douala, Cameroon, on Saturday when she was nabbed.
She had concealed 3.09 kilograms of white cocaine in her travelling bag ready to depart to her residence in Langata when police struck.
Police said they had prior information that the woman was arriving with the drugs. Officials from the Government Chemist confirmed it was white cocaine.
Head of Anti-Narcotics Unit Sebastian Ndaru and JKIA commander Philip Tuimur said the recovery was a joint operation that involved many officers.
"She is part of a cartel that is still at large and continues to operate in the region. We are looking for more of her accomplices," said Ndaru.
Police searched her house but did not find anything more. A man who was waiting for her at the airport vanished soon after learning she had been detained.
The detectives handling the case termed the suspect a seasoned trafficker. A scrutiny of her passport showed she has been a frequent traveller to South and West Africa.
She will be in court this morning, police said.
Two Nigerians
The seizure comes two weeks after police arrested two Nigerians with cocaine valued at Sh15 million.
The Nigerian businessmen who were on transit to Indonesia were arrested at JKIA on May 27 before boarding a Kenya Airways flight from Douala, Cameroon.
West Africa is the main source of hard drugs and most of them are usually en route to Asian countries.
Police said some of the traffickers have started to avoid JKIA for other regional airports.VV
