'Latino migrants mistreated in Argentina'

Wed Jun 1, 2011 4:41PM
In Argentina, thousands of Latin American immigrants are facing exploitation and discrimination on a daily basis as they are forced to work and live under inhumane conditions.

“Illegal gangs systematically bring migrants to Argentina by promising housing and secure jobs that actually do not exist. Instead, they are forced to work in inhumane conditions in the city and rural areas,” head of the La Alameda social organization, Gustavo Vera, told a Press TV correspondent.

Along with poor living and working conditions, immigrants from Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru are often denied hospital treatment in Argentina. This comes as official statistics show that Argentina is home to more than one million Latin American immigrants.

“Sometimes authorities blame the migrants for the current social problems, instead of understanding that their needs are part of a structural crisis,” Lawyer and member of the Center of Social and Legal Studies, Diego Morales, said.

According to the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Racism, migrants in Argentina are unable to make a decent living.

The institute claims that thousands of Bolivians still have no choice but to work in sweatshops and live under extremely poor conditions.

Last year, Argentina's government introduced a law to protect immigrants' rights to education, health care, and treatment services.

Although the new law has brought about some improvement, immigrants in Argentina are still subject to hostility, discrimination and exploitation, the report says.
