AJMAN — The Ajman Criminal Court of First Instance on Sunday sentenced two Arab women to five-year imprisonment each for human trafficking by selling a 17-year-old girl to a man for Dh40,000 to work as a prostitute. The court panel presided by Judge Dr Omar Obeid al-Ghoul also ordered their deportation after serving their jail terms.
According to the case, the two women, aged 32 and 35 years, brought the Arab victim from Sharjah with the intention of selling her to a man of Arab nationality residing here, exploiting her situation as she was living in the country illegally at the time. The man bought her for one of his friends who wanted to have sex with her and also push her into prostitution.
On June 12 last year, the prosecution referred them to the court on the charge of human trafficking as they transferred the victim from Sharjah to a hotel in Ajman after convincing her that if she got married, her residency status could soon be legalised.
According to the police and prosecution reports, the defendants admitted that they took the woman to a hotel in Ajman for completing a ‘misyar’ marriage contract (getting married for a period of time specified by the couple) between the victim and the man, but denied receiving Dh40,000 from him.
During the last hearing, the court heard the testimony of the man who allegedly bought the woman. He said four months before the case was registered, one of his friends gave him the phone number of one of the defendants. He called her but she was out of the country. After she returned to the country, she contacted him and told him that she had girls for sale. He agreed to buy one of them for Dh40,000 for his friend.
The two defendants came together with the victim to the hotel as agreed. He gave the first defendant Dh40,000. The first defendant then wrote in a sheet of paper that she received the amount against the sale of the victim. The victim and her passport were handed over to him. — afkarali@khaleejtimes.com
