A Kenyan woman in the US is suing a diplomat in a New York court for “human trafficking and labour violations.”
Ms Beatrice Aluoch filed a lawsuit on May 6 suing Stella Kerubo Orina for being overworked, underpaid and not being allowed to leave the house as she attended to the diplomat’s two children.
Ms Orina was working for the Kenya Mission to the United Nations at the time of the alleged abuse but moved back is currently working in the country.
New policy for immigrants
Ms Aluoch who accompanied the diplomat to the US in July 1996 is suing under a new policy announced by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services in March this year that allows former employees of diplomats who are suing their employers to remain in the country legally and obtain employment while their cases are still pending.
The policy changes are a part of the concentrated efforts by US federal authorities to curb human trafficking.
Ms Aluoch has applied for a special visa to give her time to remain in the country as waits the outcome of the case.
