The RCMP investigates alleged human trafficking between the Mormon community in Bountiful, B.C., and Texas. The allegations that at least 30 BC girls from ages 12 to 17 were sent below the border to marry have been under investigation since February this year.
Also under investigation are allegations that girls under the age of 18 were sent from the United States to Canada.
Although events under inquiry may have occured as recently as eary 2006, the RCMP is "not aware of any more recent or any ongoing incidents where young girls are currently being victimized," said RCMP Corporal Dan Moskaluk in a statement Thursday night. "The investigation is advancing and the RCMP anticipates sending investigators to Texas in the future."
Warren Jeffs, the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), was convicted in Texas earlier this week of sexual assault and aggrevated sexual assault towards two girls whom he "married" at ages 12 and 14. He was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years.
Members of FLDS living in Bountiful BC have long been suspected of human trafficking of young brides to Texas.
